Remove the background from a sprite sheet
Drop the sheet, clear the solid colour behind it, rub out whatever is left, and clean the frames in one go.
Uploading, cleaning and background removal are free. The eraser and unmarked downloads need Basic ($4.99 once).
Sprite sheets arrive with backgrounds far more often than they arrive clean. A marketplace pack ships on solid white, an old asset uses magenta as the transparency colour, a render comes out on flat black, and a scanned or screenshotted sheet has a watermark or a signature sitting in the corner. Every one of those confuses frame detection, because the tool cannot tell where a pose ends and the backdrop begins — and any of it that survives ends up baked into your game. SpriteFix clears the flat colour behind the art, then hands you a brush for whatever is left over.
Sound familiar?
- A solid white, black, or magenta backdrop where you needed transparency.
- An artist signature or watermark sitting in a corner of the sheet.
- Guide lines, grid marks, or stray sparks left over from the export.
- Frame detection gluing poses together because the background is not really empty.
How to do it in SpriteFix
Drop the sheet and let it clean once
Upload the sheet in the workspace. SpriteFix processes it straight away and lands you on the Ready screen — that is where the editing tools live.
Open Edit image
On Ready, pick the file and click Edit image (or Edit this file when you uploaded several). The editor fills the screen.
Clear the flat colour
If the sheet sits on a solid background, Remove Background appears in the toolbar. One click turns that colour transparent across the whole sheet.
Erase what is left by hand
Click Eraser for the things no detector can guess at — a signature, a guide line, one stubborn spark. Zoom in first; the brush works on real pixels. Undo takes back a stroke, Reset puts everything back. Included with Basic ($4.99 once).
Save and Process
Saving re-runs the clean on the edited image, so the frames are detected against a genuinely empty background this time.
What you get back
- A sheet with real transparency instead of a painted-on backdrop.
- Signatures, watermarks and guide lines gone before the frames are cut.
- Better frame detection, because the gutters are actually empty.
- The same crop, flip and rotate tools in the same screen, if the sheet also needs straightening.
What it will not do
- One-click background removal expects a flat, even colour. A gradient, a photo, or a painted scene behind the sprites is not something it can separate — erase those by hand or crop them out.
- The eraser is included with Basic and Pro; free accounts see it locked.
- Editing changes the file for that session, the same way flip and rotate do. Undo and Reset work until you save; after that, re-upload the original to start over.
- SpriteFix does not repaint or fill in art it removed. It takes pixels away, it does not invent them.
We would rather tell you the limits here than have you find them after paying. Full list in the limitations chapter.
Free to try. $4.99 once to keep it clean.
Clean, preview, and play as much as you like for free — free PNG downloads carry a watermark. Basic removes the mark for life for $4.99 paid once. Pro ($14.99 once) adds grid cutting, per-frame ZIP export, and bigger batches. There is no subscription.
Questions people ask
- How do I make a sprite sheet background transparent?
- Upload it, open Edit image on the Ready screen, and click Remove Background. That works when the backdrop is one flat colour. Anything left over — a signature, a stray mark — comes out with the eraser.
- Why does Remove Background not appear for my sheet?
- The button only shows when SpriteFix detects a solid backdrop. If your sheet already has transparency, or the background is a gradient or a painted scene, there is no single colour to remove and the button stays hidden.
- Can I erase just one part of one frame?
- Yes. Zoom in and use the eraser with a small brush — it clears exactly the pixels you drag over, on that one file only. Other uploads in the queue are untouched.
- Will erasing ruin my original file?
- No. SpriteFix works on a copy in your browser for that session; the file on your computer is never modified. Undo and Reset work until you save, and re-uploading gives you a clean slate.
